The principle of operation of the thermostat in the car: simple, but ingenious

A thermostat is a mechanical valve that regulates the direction of antifreeze flows in the cooling system of an internal combustion engine. Its main task is to accelerate the heating of the engine to operating temperature and prevent critical overheating of the piston group parts.
The design of the node is based on the physical laws of thermal expansion of materials. The autonomy and absence of complex electronics make this mechanism one of the most reliable and trouble-free elements of the thermal circuit of modern cars.
Mechanics of antifreeze distribution
After starting the cold engine, the thermostat is in the closed position, blocking the access of liquid to the main radiator. Antifreeze circulates through a small cooling circuit, washing only the cylinder block jacket and the heat exchanger of the interior heater. Local circulation ensures that the motor reaches its rated power quickly.
Reaching an operating temperature in the range of 85 to 95 degrees starts the process of gradually opening the bypass valve. The system begins to mix hot antifreeze with cold, distributing the flows along the following lines:
- opening the pressure relief pipe in a large circle;
- partial closure of the bypass channel of the small contour;
- liquid supply to the honeycomb of the front radiator.
The full opening of the valve transfers the entire volume of coolant to a large circle. Antifreeze passes through the radiator, where it is cooled by an incoming stream of air or by forcibly activated fans. The cooled liquid returns to the cylinder block, taking away excess heat energy.
The cyclic operation of the valve maintains a temperature balance in a narrow corridor. When driving along the highway in the cold, radiator blowing increases, the temperature drops, and the thermostat covers the section, returning part of the flow to a small circle to prevent overcooling of the cylinders.
Physics of expansion of a thermosensitive element
The core of the thermostat is a sealed brass or copper cylinder filled with technical wax - ceresin. This material has a high coefficient of volumetric expansion during the transition from a solid state of aggregation to a liquid state. The copper capsule instantly transfers the thermal energy of the antifreeze to the wax filler.
When heated, ceresin begins to melt, significantly increasing in volume. The increased internal pressure pushes out the metal rod, which overcomes the resistance of the powerful return spring. The stem is rigidly connected to the valve plate, which acts as a flap. The interaction of the elements takes place according to the following algorithm:
- ceresin expands by millimeters, squeezing out the stem;
- the plate moves away from the saddle, opening the slot for antifreeze;
- the return spring stabilizes the flap position.
The cooling of the liquid starts the reverse process of wax crystallization. The ceresin is compressed, the pressure in the cylinder drops, and the return spring presses the valve plate back against the seat. This cycle is repeated thousands of times during the trip, ensuring precise metering of the coolant without the involvement of microprocessors.
Some modern engines are equipped with electronically controlled thermostats. A heating element is integrated into their wax capsule, which obeys the commands of the engine control unit. This allows you to preemptively open the valve at high loads without waiting for the antifreeze to heat up naturally.
Symptoms of a jammed bypass valve
Mechanical failure of the assembly occurs due to corrosion, the use of poor-quality antifreeze or fatigue of the return spring. Jamming the valve in the open position leads to a constant circulation of liquid in a large circle. The engine cannot reach the operating temperature, fuel consumption increases, and the interior heater supplies cold air.
Jamming in the closed position is a critical malfunction leading to fatal damage to the motor. Antifreeze boils in the cooling jacket, unable to lower the temperature through the radiator. The thermometer needle on the dashboard goes into the red zone, there is a risk of deformation of the cylinder head and scuffing in the piston group.
The operability of the removed thermostat is checked in a container with water. The part is immersed in a liquid and heated, controlling the temperature with an immersion thermometer. If the stem does not extend when reaching 90 degrees or does not return to its place after cooling, the assembly must be replaced.
